Led by Glasgow City Council, The Glasgow Canopy Project will bring hundreds of new street trees, woodlands, hedgerows, and wildlife habitats to the Govan and Dalmarnock areas. With funding from the Urban Forestry Programme Challenge Fund, the project aims to increase canopy cover, support biodiversity, and build greener, climate-resilient neighbourhoods.
The project will involve the planting of 454 standard trees and over 5,500 whips and hedgerows, focusing on areas where tree cover is currently less than 10%. Community participation will be supported through collaboration with The Conservation Volunteers (TCV), creating opportunities for local residents, schools, and volunteers to get involved in tree planting, outdoor classrooms, and forest school activities.
Trees planted will be managed under Glasgow City Council’s Tree Action Plan, with maintenance, monitoring, and community involvement built into long-term sustainability plans. This project will also support the Council’s broader climate adaptation and green infrastructure goals, helping to shape healthier, more vibrant urban spaces.
