NANA’s Garden: Growing Trees, Skills and Community in Lochside

NANA’s (Nature And Nurture Area) Garden is a community-led urban greening project in Lochside, Dumfries, an area of high deprivation and low tree cover. Building on two years of successful engagement, the project will plant small native trees and fruit trees, establish long-term care plans, and involve children, young people and families in learning about trees, biodiversity and climate resilience. Delivered from The Cabin and surrounding green spaces, the project will improve local tree equity, create greener everyday spaces, and support wellbeing through hands-on participation, skills development and environmental stewardship. Wheatley Homes South (formerly Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership) provides social housing across Dumfries and Galloway and owns the land where the project will take place. Permission has been granted for tree planting and related activities. Dumfries has one of the lowest tree equity scores in Scotland, making this project particularly important for addressing inequalities in access to green space.

“This funding is a huge boost for our community. It is helping us grow NANA’s Garden into a place where people can connect, learn and feel proud of where they live. Together, we’re creating greener spaces and brighter futures in Lochside.”
Angela Gilmour Managing Director, LIFT Dumfries
