Future Woodlands Scotland

New Urban Forestry Manager joins us as we set strategic direction for next five years

We welcome Des Hackett as charity’s first Urban Forestry Manager.

Des has a wealth of experience in public policy and greenspace development, working for both the Irish Civil Service and City of Edinburgh Council.

Des’s primary objective will be to lead and support delivery of the charity’s ambitious £10m Urban Forestry Programme to improve the environment in cities and towns in Scotland. The Urban Programme is funded by bp as part of their Scottish windfarm, Morven, jointly developed with EnBW and will support urban greening projects, tree planting, biodiversity, education, community involvement and green job creation.

Supporting our ‘A Green Future’ strategy

Des’s appointment supports our ‘A Green Future’ strategy – a five-year vision to drive change so that Scotland’s trees and native woodlands are thriving for wildlife, communities and climate. Our strategy is focused on four goals:

  1. Creating and restoring trees and native woodlands.
  2. Developing skills in the industry.
  3. Increasing knowledge and awareness through research
  4. Sustaining impact.

Chief Executive Shireen Chambers, MBE, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Des as our first Urban Forestry Manager. We’re committed to making a positive impact on the urban environment and with Des’ appointment, plan to take significant strides towards achieving these goals.

Commenting on his appointment, Des said:

“Trees are remarkable, offering an incredible number of benefits. In urban areas, their impact is even greater, regulating temperatures, enhancing air quality and adding beauty to our gardens, streets and greenspaces. However, planting and maintaining trees in urban environments can be complex and costly. I’m optimistic that our Urban Forestry Programme will pave the way for our towns and cities to establish and nurture greenspaces. This initiative holds the promise of transforming our neighbourhoods, ensuring their enhancement for generations to come.”
