 Welcome

There are 4 sections to this application. First, we will ask for your contact information, organisation details and a brief summary of what you’re applying for. Then you'll have more space to tell us about your project's outputs, how you will deliver the project and how it will be managed. Finally, you can tell us what sets your project apart and how it will make a difference.

Here is a Word version of the application to help you prepare or collaborate offline, in advance of submitting it online. Please do not submit this by email, we will only consider applications sent via this online form.

Accessibility: if you would like additional accessibility support, where our online application process may be a barrier to applying, please contact [email protected].

Please keep in mind that:
  • All fields marked with an asterisk (*) on the application are required.

  • You will be given the option to review and print the application before you submit it.
How much you can apply for
Funding decisions for smaller grants (£2,000-£20,000) will be made by mid-December. For the larger grants (£20,001-£100,000), successful applicants will be invited to a second stage in early 2025, with funding decisions expected by April 2025.

1. Application Summary

We welcome applications from any not-for-profit registered or constituted body. This includes community groups, state funded educational institutions, charities, community interest companies, development trusts, local authorities or partnerships made up of these organisations. We are not accepting applications from individuals. However, we encourage you to share the Urban Forestry Programme with your local community council or organisations working in urban forestry or your Local Authority.

If you’re representing a partnership, please supply details for the lead organisation who will be banking the grant and responsible for reporting.

If you are a new organisation and don't have signed accounts, please upload your most recent management accounts

If you are applying on behalf of a Local Authority, we do not require this

This is the total cost of your project, not just the amount you're requesting from Future Woodlands Scotland.

Funding decisions for smaller grants (£2,000-£20,000) will be made by mid-December. For the larger grants (£20,001-£100,000), successful applicants will be invited to a second stage in early 2025, with funding decisions expected by April 2025.

Please note that there is a maximum of £100,000 funding over the total three years.

Please note that there is a minimum of £2,000 and a maximum of £100,000 funding

2. What will your project do?

The Urban Forestry Programme aims to help towns and cities across Scotland  achieve the 3-30-300 rule to build healthier and more climate resilient communities. We are interested in projects that make a direct contribution to this through establishing trees and greenspace, improving access to woodlands and greenspace, or projects that will help  and enable that process. Proposals should be well thought through and outcomes clearly set out.

We are also keen to support projects that will educate people on the benefits of trees, raise awareness of their importance, and encourage and enable people to look after them. Proposals should clearly set out how learning and awareness raising will take place and what the intended outcomes are.

3. Tell us how you will deliver your project

While we believe everyone can benefit from the 3-30-300 rule we are particularly interested in proposals that will address “tree equity” and  are keen to see projects that will support areas where there is low tree canopy cover and that have the greatest need of the benefits that trees and woodlands provide.

We strongly support involving communities in planting, looking after, learning about and enjoying trees and woodlands. To that end we would expect to see strong evidence of, or a considered proposal for, engaged communities or projects that will facilitate that.

We also wish to encourage a collaborative approach. This might involve a formal partnership but at minimum proposals should be demonstrating that key stakeholders have been identified or are being engaged with.

Where possible, please provide the Tree Equity Priority (low, moderate, high or highest priority) for the neighbourhood(s) where your project is taking place or is relevant to. Tree Equity map.

All projects must demonstrate viable proposals and set out how they will be sustained in the longer term. Proposals should clearly set out a budget identifying what the funds will be spent on, additional funding that the project will attract (in-kind contributions should also be shown), how the project will be managed and plans for longer term funding (where appropriate). Supporting evidence such as a track record of delivery could also be included.

Please upload your project budget in a spreadsheet format, including any confirmed funding and what activities or items you are asking us to fund.

4. What sets your project apart and how will it make a difference?

Particularly for projects that are seeking more than £20,000 we are keen to see projects that are adopting a novel or innovative approach. We are also interested in projects that have a wider impact or that can be replicated or scaled up.

We want to keep this process as smooth as we can, if you have any feedback on the application process please let us know and we will endeavour to improve.
